Science Fiction Dancehall Classics – Compilation

“At the risk of hyperbole, I can say that Science Fiction Dancehall Classics is necessary listening for just about anyone who reads FACT; it trickled down to just about everything we cover here, rap music included. If you only buy one thing off of this list, readers, this should probably be the one”- FACT

“Jackson has really pulled a rabbit out of the hat here, showing his love for music that is consistently invigorating and challenging.” – DMC World 5/5 Compilation of the week

“Jackson has been let loose in the colossal On-U vaults and come up with a collection which is startling, individual and speaker-shattering as could be hoped for. Monumental selection of Adrian Sherwood’s finest.”- Electronic Sound

“The label has been much-anthologized over the years, but never so thoroughly and yet succinctly. To listen to these 27 tracks is, quite literally, to hear history being made.” – Pop Matters (9/10)

“Put simply, this is milestone music. File under: Groundbreaking dub-dance” – Mixmag

“An exceptional snapshot of what the early 1980s sound like on the UK’s more adventurous floors.”- DJ Mag

Top 10 compilation of 2015 – Resident Advisor

“Serves as THE essential ON-U Sound primer, demonstrating the breadth and aesthetic of the label, and providing an introduction to most of the artists, friends and associates.”- Test Pressing

“The canny selections Jackson has excavated highlight the impact (Sherwood) has made on bass music, a human hub at the centre of a sprawling network that fosters cross pollination and cultural exchanges between Jamaican underground reggae and dub, post-punk experimentalism and the burgeoning fields of hip hop and UK dance music.” – The Quietus

Science Fiction Dancehall Classics. is a selection of classics, rarities and unreleased tracks from legendary producer Adrian Sherwood’s On-U Sound label vaults, Curated by long time obsessive of the label Trevor Jackson it features 3 completely unreleased tracks (inc. a crucial early cut by Neneh Cherry) and 6 tracks that have never been reissued on CD or digital (inc. the amazing debut recording by a pre-Massive Attack Shara Nelson).

This is the electro-fried avant-garde side of On-U Sound. Whilst still containing the dub DNA that define Adrian Sherwood’s productions, these tracks document a period when this sonic vision was realised through saturated sheets of electronics, reverberating drum machines and extreme chopped-up tape edits.
